Canon Nancy Turner Jones

Sermons

The Rev. Canon Nancy Turner's Jones' first calling in life was music. She earned her bachelor's degree in music from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, and then went on to study organ with Roberta Gary at the University of Cincinnati's College-Conservatory of Music, where she earned a master's degree.

A family move led to a brief, temporary position as organist and choirmaster at Christ Church Cathedral in Lexington, Kentucky and there, this Lutheran born and bred girl fell in love with the Episcopal Church. She enrolled at Lexington Theological Seminary, where she earned her master's in divinity. She also earned her doctorate in ministry at the University of the South (Sewanee) in Tennessee. She was ordained to the priesthood in 2001.

Through her ministry, she has taught church music and liturgy, worked with cancer patients and served those with AIDS. As rector of St. David's Church in Detroit, she worked with a congregation of immigrants from South Africa, Haiti, Jamaica, Nigeria and Liberia. Together they reached out to those who were homeless, built successful youth and newcomer programs and held liturgies that blended Anglican traditions with Gospel and ethnic music.

Nancy and her husband, L.P., make their home in Cincinnati. He is also a minister and serves as head of staff at Mt. Washington Presbyterian Church.

The Joneses have five grown children.
